How to Create Online Courses That Sell

How to create online courses
Want to know how to create online courses that sell?

The first and most important step is to create an online course that sells. This means, you need to think about who your online course is for.

Just creating an online course and hoping that it will sell is a bad strategy. How well your online course sells depends on several factors. But the most important thing is to do everything with your audience in mind.

Ideally, you already have an audience. Maybe you have a blog or a YouTube channel or some other platform where you publish content.

If you don’t, that’s fine as well. You can create your online course now and build an audience later or use paid advertising to promote your online course once it’s created.

Nevertheless, you should always create your online course with your audience in mind. If you already have an audience, look at the most frequent questions you get asked. What questions, comments or messages are you getting? Are people requesting content or asking for help? Do you ever get inquiries about coaching or consulting?

The best online courses are ones that people indirectly or directly request. Creating something that people want and are already asking for will always work best.

Just creating a course that you hope will sell is likely not going to work and will be disappointing.

But what if you don’t already have an audience? What if you’re starting from scratch? In that case, you can do some research in your niche and look at what online courses are already selling in your industry.

Look up your competitors and see if they have online courses. Check out what they cover in their online courses if they sell any.

In case you can’t find any competitors that are selling online courses, a simple Google search should help you figure out what type of courses are already selling in your niche.

Just type (niche) + online course into Google and see what comes up.

If nothing comes up and you can’t find any online courses, it might be a sign that online courses aren’t a thing or simply not profitable in your niche.

In that case, think twice before creating an online course. But if you find a few online courses in your niche, this is a great sign. It means that there is probably money to be made by selling online courses in your niche.

How to Structure an Online Course

If you are serious about creating an online course, it’s worth buying an online course from one of your competitors.

This will give you an idea of what others are covering in their online courses. It will also provide you with insights on how to structure an online course.

Here are some general rules of thumb:

An easy way to figure out how to structure an online course is by asking yourself where your ideal customers are right now and where they want to be.

People buy online courses because they want to achieve something desirable or find a solution to a problem or frustration they’re currently experiencing.

Take a blank sheet of paper, turn it horizontal and write down “A” on one end and “B” on the other end.

“A” is the current reality and situation of your ideal customer. “B” is the outcome they want to achieve or their life once they’ve overcome the problem or challenge they’re facing.

Now draw a straight line between “A” and “B”. This is your student’s journey or transformation.

Next, ask yourself what four major steps someone has to take to get from “A” to “B”. If you had to break down their journey or transformation into only four steps, what would they be?

Add four small vertical lines on top of your horizontal line. Each of these lines marks one of the four big steps or milestones your students have to achieve to get from “A” to “B”.

Write down what each step is next to the four lines. These four steps become the sections or modules of your online course.

In a next step, create a list with things people have to learn or do for each of the four steps. Come up with 4-10 things people need to learn for each of the four steps.

Each item will become a video lesson in your course. This means, you now have four sections or modules. And four to ten video ideas for each section. All in all, you have 16-40 videos mapped out for your online course.

If you’ve been asking yourself how to create online courses that are simple but valuable, this is a simple method you can use.

How to Create Online Courses for Free

When it comes to recording your online course videos, don’t overthink it. You don’t need over-the-top production quality, a video editor or expensive equipment.

Paradoxically, the more professional you try to make your online course look, the more disconnected people might feel from the content.

Your online course should build intimacy and invite people into your personal life. Recording a video sitting on a couch in your living room is more personal than a cold and corporate green screen look.

Students love feeling connected to the instructor that’s teaching the course. The good news is, less is more when it comes to creating a great course.

It also means you don’t have to break the bank to hire a videographer, video editor, professional lights or a team. This can quickly cost thousands or tens of thousands of dollars and make your course “try hard”.

Instead, use a regular DSLR camera or your smart phone to record your online course videos. Any equipment that works for YouTube videos will work for online courses.

If you’re going to share your screen and explain what you’re doing as you go along, you can use Quicktime on Mac or Camtasia on Widows to record your screen. This is especially great for niches that require demonstrating steps or providing instructions on-screen.

When it comes to editing your online course, it’s not necessary to hire a video editor. This can be expensive. Basic video editing is simple and something you can quickly learn with a few YouTube tutorials.

On Mac, you can edit videos for free using iMovie. It’s simple and intuitive. On Windows, you can use Windows Movie Maker. It’s free and allows you to make basic edits and cuts.

How to create online courses for free? Stay away from expensive equipment, video editors and videographers. Bootstrap your online course with “no budget”. Many people do this, and it’ll make your course more likable.

How to Price Your Online Course

Once you’ve structured your online course and recorded the content without breaking the bank, it’s time to price your online course.

The price of your online course depends on your niche and if it’s a beginner’s course or an advanced course. Beginner courses are usually cheaper than advanced courses.

As a general rule of thumb, most online courses are priced somewhere between $100-$2,000. Charging less than $100 is not recommended and not necessary. Online courses tend to be seen as significantly more valuable than books.

If books sell for $10-$30, your online course should sell for at least 10X the price of a book. Looking at what other people charge for their courses in your niche can be helpful, but it’s better to charge too much than too little.

If you see that all your competitors are selling their courses for very cheap, it might be a good idea to step it up. Create a course that is more valuable and add a price tag that is more expensive than your competitors.

This is why buying an online course from a competitor is a good idea. You can then include better or more detailed information in your course and charge more than they do.

Follow this general pricing structure:

Pretty exciting right? If you’ve been asking yourself how to create online courses and make a lot of money from them, it’s all about combining low upfront investment with the high profit margins that online courses provide.

This is how some people are able to make millions with online courses. Unlike physical products, there are no manufacturing costs, warehouses, factories or shipping costs.

Online courses are simply helpful advice in the form of a set of videos, bundled together and sold for a few hundred dollars.

Now that you know how to create online courses, let’s talk about the best software to create online training courses.

Online Course Software

There are a ton of different online course platforms that allow you to set up and host your own online course without any technical skills.

However, these platforms come with a small monthly fee. If you’re serious about creating and selling online courses, it’s recommended and totally worth it to sign up for one of these online course platforms.

In case you want to create online courses for free and sell them without an online course platform, you can keep it super simple.

Just upload your videos to a Google Drive folder. Tell people to pay you through PayPal and whenever someone pays you, send them the link to the Google Drive folder with the videos.

This is a very basic way of delivering an online course, but we’ve seen one creator that made tens of thousands of dollars using this method. It’s not very elegant or user-friendly. But it’s completely free and works if you’re on a shoe-string budget.

If you want to automate the payment process and have people receive a link to access the online course immediately after their purchase, there is a variety of online course software you can use.

Here is a list of online course software:

There are of course more out there, but these are the most popular online course platforms used by most creators these days.

Kajabi

Of the online course software listed above, Kajabi has probably been around for the longest time and is used and trusted by some of the biggest course creators.

It has the most elegant and user-friendly design. It allows you to create checkout pages for your online course. This means, people can pay you directly through Kajabi and the money is deposited into your account.

Once someone has purchased your online course, they automatically receive an email from Kajabi with their login details.

Your students can then log-in to a secured member-only area and access your online course content. Anyone who hasn’t purchased the course won’t be able to access the videos.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Kajabi that’s more flexible in terms of designing your checkout pages and member area, you should take a look at ClickFunnels.

ClickFunnels

ClickFunnels is one of our all-time favorite tools due to its flexibility. You can do almost anything with it, including setting up and hosting online courses.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more and don’t mind using multiple tools in your business, go with Kajabi. In case you want to run your online business with just a single tool, we recommend signing up for ClickFunnels.

It’s also a bit cheaper than Kajabi, which might be a benefit if money is a factor.

ClickFunnels is a website builder, sales funnel builder and online course platform all in one tool. You can pretty much get rid of any other tools if you use ClickFunnels.

Teachable

A third option is Teachable. This online course platform is used by many course creators. The member area doesn’t look as sleek and elegant as Kajabi’s but it’s very user-friendly.

You won’t be able to build flexible and sophisticated sales funnels, landing pages and checkout pages.

And your ability to customize the look of your member area like you can do with ClickFunnels is limited, but Teachable is nevertheless a great option for creators on a budget.

It’s the cheapest platform of all three but not the one with the most functionality.

All three platforms have free trials. If you’re not sure which online course software is right for you, consider signing up for a free trial with all three platforms.

Once you’ve played around with all three, you can determine which one you resonate with most. Different people like different platforms. And you won’t known which one you like best until you’ve given each platform a “test drive”.

How to Create Online Courses Step-By-Step

Now that you known the best online course software, let’s look at how to create online courses step-by-step.

For this quick demonstration, we’ll use Kajabi.

Once you’ve set up your account in Kajabi, select “Products” and click on the blue “+ New Product” button. You can then choose from a set of templates. Select the template “Online Course” and click “Get Started”.

Next up, give your online course a title and write a short description. You can also upload a product thumbnail. But feel free to skip this step and add this later.

You’ll now see a populated online course that you can edit. You’ll see the categories and posts. Change the categories to the four steps you mapped out on the sheet of paper.

Click on “+ Add Content” to add a new post. For the name of the post, choose the first item on your list that you mapped out earlier in our exercise.

If you don’t have your videos recorded yet, you can still set up your online course structure in Kajabi and then upload the videos once you’ve recorded them.

Your post will be in “Draft” mode by default. This allows you to edit the post, upload your video and publish it once you’re ready.

If you click on the small pencil symbol, you can edit the post. This is where you’ll be able to upload your recorded video. You can also add a description, set a thumbnail for the post and add change the title.

Once you’re done adding the online course video, you can click “Preview” to see what your lessons looks like. This is what your students get to see.

As you’re probably realizing by now, setting up an online course is quite easy. Repeat these steps for all of your video lessons and you’re pretty much done with the course setup.

There are some other settings you can change in Kajabi later on. For example, you can set up checkout pages where people can pay for your online course. You can add an instructor image and bio.

There are a lot of things you can do with Kajabi that go beyond the scope of this article, but the basic setup is simple.
